WANTED: FREELANCE ANIMATOR FOR CONTRACT WORK

Rome Reborn is an international academic initiative, begun in 1996 and completed in 2018, to reconstruct ancient Rome using digital technology (see: www.romereborn.org). The 3D reconstruction is being used as a resource for a series of apps running on PCs (Mac, Windows) and VR headsets (Oculus, Vive) published by a start-up company called Flyover Zone Productions.

Flyover is looking to contract its animation work to a talented animator who can meet the challenge of creating avatars of ancient Romans. In particular, we are looking for the following rigged figures:

  • boy and girl, about 7 years old. Clothes: tunics. Variants with different hair color: black, brown, red, blond.
  • male and female, about 15 years old. Clothes: toga (male); stola worn over a tunica intima (female). Variants with different hair color: black, brown, red, blond.
  • man and woman, about 20 years old. Clothes: One set wearing toga (man); stola worn over a tunica intima (woman). A second set wearing tunics. Variants with different hair color: black, brown, red, blond.
  • man and woman, about 35 years old. Clothes: One set wearing toga (man); stola worn over a tunica intima (woman). A second set wearing tunics. Variants with different hair color: black, brown, red, blond.
  • man and woman, about 50 years old.  Clothes: One set wearing toga (man); stola worn over a tunica intima (woman). A second set wearing tunics. Variants with different hair color: salt & pepper, graying brown, graying blond, gray.

The difficulty of the job arises from the fact that ancient clothing such as the stola, toga, and tunic did not cling to the body as modern clothes tend to do. Especially, when the figures start to walk, the clothes must flow and sway with their own physics. Hence, the off-the-shelf animation software we have tried gives historically incorrect results: when the avatars move, the clothes just cling tightly (and absurdly) to the bodies. Finally, the figures need to be optimized for real-time use in the game engine Unity.

If you are a talented animator willing to work for remuneration below what studios producing commercial films and games can afford to pay, please send us a message and a link to your portfolio at: info@romereborn.org
